Morning Came the 34th Day

We looked forward to today's excursion to Yardie Creek. And it was a trip! Little bus took us all the way round the Cape- way to go, especially with a local guide. You can see from this pic the extent of the reefs and so why diving, snorkelling and surfing the reef are the main attractions.

It was 80 kms out there. The route is sprinkled with camping sites and the majority is National Park. Just near Vlamingh lighthouse was a large private  caravan park, now deserted because it has been bought by Twiggy Forrest. He applied to have the road diverted so it directly accesses the site. Knocked back once but now aporoved. He's paying for the road realignment! Could only happen in WA.

Ash, the driver, was anxious to point out the wildlife and obviously is a bird watcher. Spotted two eagles on a bush and stopped for Luke to take photos. They had picked up a rabbit from the road and were feasting. We stopped at a bower bird nest which Akex said had been moved and renovated.

The amazing thing was he had sorted all his collection, shells in one pile, limestone pieces in another. Note the elaborate straw entrance.

Yardie Creek was formed in bedded limestone, distinctly layered. Excellent habitat for black footed rock wallabies, osprey, rays in the water, and millions of fossils.

000s of photos ! The colours were stupendous

In all the crevices and caves and on the ledges we could see well camouflaged wallabies.

While waiting for the return bus we crossed the dunes the see what was on the other side
Different kind of coast! Our guide explained the economics of the tourist business- the huge amount of assets and staff needed for say a Swim With the Whale Sharks activity.  Seems the prices are justified. But up this way everything is more expensive, just got to expect it.
Exmouth too is teeming with visitors. Normal population is around 3000 but doubles in peak season....and everyone has a caravan/boat!. So it is quite a small town. It appears the recent developments have been around built marinas..a  few $M places. Accom is at a premium, if you can find it! Even ages ago when we booked we had to take what we could get.. .pretty basic but sufficed

It had everything from back packers to luxury....we were in "budget", i.e. no hair dryer! Talking of hair, Luke had trouble finding a barber who was open. Struck gold yesterday behind the backpackers...needs drive action! He came out pretty good for the price of a beer. She was a french research student on an extended visa! Lia by name.

We are quite over bought meals so last night did salads from IGA -they also made our packed lunches for the trip today. They have 2 IGAs opposite each other- one speciaising in fresh food. And it was delicious!
My last night in the twin bed with wheels that goes for a ride on the tiled floor every time I roll over! Life's a ride!
So ends the 34th day.
